Listening to Physical Hunger
For a successful weight loss journey first and foremost we have to understand the difference between two basic instincts of our life
  • Hunger
  • Empty stomach
An empty stomach and hunger are two different things. Hunger means that your energy level isdropping whereas an empty stomach is a good thing.
It is imperative to learn to identify the kind of hunger that you are feeling, whether is it eye hunger, nose hunger, ear hunger, mouth hunger, stomach hunger, mind hunger, emotional hunger, or cellular hunger. Once you understand the kind of hunger you are experiencing and address it accordingly you will end up not eating more than needed.
To identify real hunger we can ask two important questions to ourselves before taking any meal:
  1. Why are we eating?
  2. Whether we are truly hungry?
To begin with, it is a good idea to pick one meal per day to focus on these points. Once you have the hang of it, it becomes more natural. Then you can implement these basics into more meals.Another important thing that we need to understand is that an empty stomach is good for our body. Our stomach needs to be empty for any correction and fortification in the body. Purification on the cellular level does happen when you have an empty stomach. In the Indian ascent system of Yoga and Ayurveda, this has been emphasized almost five thousand years ago.Fasting as a purification tool has been highly advocated for its benefit forthe rejuvenation of the body and mind. Recently Professor Oshumi of the Tokyo Institute of Technology has been awarded the 2016 noble prize in Medicine for his research in autophagy. .Autophagy is the body's way of cleaning out damaged cells, in order to regenerate newer, healthier cells. Defects in autophagy have been linked to diseases ranging from Alzheimer’sdisease to cancer.Autophagy is triggered by fasting and it is thought to be one reason fast fasting appears to save odd aging.

Things to be followed during fasting:
  • Should not start fasting without expert advice.
  • Should eat very simple /light food, the night before fasting.
  • Duration of the fasting should be decided on the basis of age and physical condition.
  • One should not be afraid about the changes taking place in the body during fasting and should remain calm.
  • Avoid heavy rigorous and intense workouts.
  • The important thing to remember is fasting needs to be done in moderation. Never fast if the cravings of the body and mind become excessive and don’t fast if you do not feel like fasting.
  • Break the fast by having fruit juice.
  • Should eat simple/light food after ending the fasting

It may not be so easy to get all the answers at the first instance but with time we can differentiate between physical hunger and an empty stomach and understand the body better. We can differentiate between different pangs of hunger and it becomes easier to eat in ways that are more satiating and filling.
