We have often got smitten by the muscular body builders and have wondered the secret behind their beefed-up bodies. Fact remains few have got it through sheer hard work and determination and few have taken the short cut and have abused their bodies by the illegal use of steroids. Steroids are synthetic substances similar to the male sex hormone testosterone. They do have legitimate medical uses. Sometimes doctors prescribe anabolic steroids to help people with certain kinds of hormonal issues, such as delayed puberty or diseases that cause muscle loss such as cancer and AIDS. Use of anabolic steroids for muscle building is illegal and is never prescribed by doctors. According to the   Anabolic Steroids Control Act of 1990, anabolic steroids is in the Schedule III drug list. That means, using of Anabolic steroids without the consultation of a medical practitioner is illegal.
There are many different kinds of steroids. Here's a list of some of the most common anabolic steroids taken today: anadrol, oxandrin, dianabol, winstrol, deca-durabolin, and equipoise.
When steroids get into the body, they go to different organs and muscles. It affects the cells and creates protein which in return causes trouble. For e.g. this can make the liver cause tumor and become cancerous. This can also cause ruptures and result in internal bleeding.
Steroids affect individual cells and make them create proteins. These proteins spell trouble. The liver, for example, can grow tumors and develop cancer. Steroid abusers may also develop a rare condition called peliosishepatis in which blood-filled cysts crop up on the liver. Both the tumors and cysts can rupture and cause internal bleeding.
Steroids cause harm to the heart too. It has caused stroke and heart attacks in many athletes. Recent cardiology congress has published a comprehensive report based on their studies for eleven years and have conclude that those who have taken anabolic steroid for prolong period, the thickness of their cardiac muscles has reduced significantly. It is ironical that some young bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts take anabolic steroid to enhance their biceps, chest muscles but by doing this they are reducing their heart muscles and their life span both.
According to news by Times of India on 02 April 2019a young doctor from Delhi Dr. Mayank Kumar Vashishth was founded dead at his rented apartment at New Town. He was a fitness freak. The post-mortem suggested presence of excessive steroids In Vashishth's blood, which may have resulted in sudden heart attack and death.
The possession or sale of anabolic steroids without a valid license or prescription is illegal. Sample possession of illicitly obtaining anabolic steroid carries a maximum penalty of one year's imprisonment, if   this is an individual's 1st drug offence. According to Times of India – 11 Nov 2018 Kochi: A 27 Years old Gym Trainer was arrested with steroids worth over Rs 10 lakh. 'The use of steroids does not fall under NDPS (Narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances) Act. Hence they hand over those involved to drugs controller. The drug controller then registers case against them It is extremely unfortunate that young aspirant trainers sometimes unknowingly fall in the trap of illegal drug trafficking and become criminal.
For making oneself fit one needs to discover new skills within their body. For a fitness aspirant it is important to understand the life forces, we have 206 bones, 600 muscles, 100 billion nerves and 30 trillion cells in our body. The world population is 8 trillion, so we can imagine what types of monumental jobs our amazing body is performing each day. The most sophisticated machine in the world “The human body” is the biggest asset of our life and we should not destroy it by using unauthorized substances.
Schwarzenegger seven-time Olympia and Mr. Universe title winner, the world's best fitness and body building ambassador says “I don't encourage anyone to use drugs because it is the wrong message. People should take food, supplements vitamins and all of the nutritious stuff that is available, but stay away from drugs”. He added “I want bodybuilding to be seen as a respectable sport. It says body building, not body destruction”. When he became governor of the California. He vetoed a bill that would have required high school coaches in California to teach about the dangerous effects of steroids and illegal substance.
Fitness simply means being happy. Feeling the joy of being functionally strong and agile. So be it fitness or sports, anabolic steroids are prohibited. If any athlete admits that he is taking steroids, he should not be considered an athlete. From Ben Johns to, Maradona to recent Prithvi Shaw all have been punished by sports body for their illegal act.
